We left Kings Mountain SP in Blacksburg, SC and headed towards Myrtle Beach SP today. Our State Park reservations start on Monday, June 18th so we decided to stop at Lake Wateree SP for one night.
Lake Wateree lies 30 miles northeast of Columbia, South Carolina near Interstate 77. Duke Energy created the lake in 1920 by building a dam on the Catawba River to provide hydro-electric power for textile mills and the surrounding area. Lake Wateree is 27 miles long and covers more than 13,800 acres with 242 miles of shoreline when full.
The 'A' is Lake Wateree State Park
The 238-acre park’s offerings include a tackle shop/park store with refueling dock and public boat ramp. A large population of crappie, bream, largemouth bass, catfish and later, striped bass, has made the lake a popular fishing spot since the dam was built in 1920 (making it one of the state’s oldest).
The park’s wooded, lakeside campground has 72 sites. Each site is paved and has individual water and electrical hookups, and picnic table. The campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers. 50 sites can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, others up to 35 feet. Five sites are pull-through, while 15 are waterfront.

We took a long walk around the campground and park to check things out for a future visit. Of course, we thought we would really like a lake front site. However, all of those sites, except for site 1, where very unlevel and had a major drop at the shoreline;o((
You could not access the lake from your site!!
Very quite, private and wooded!!
We forgot that today was Father's Day
and the state park was extremely busy.

However, the facilities are great and really well maintained.

Lake Wateree is quite large and very busy with lots of motorboats;o((
However, we found places where kayaking would be great!!
Anytime but summer would probably be wonderful here!
Lake Wateree is definitely a hidden GEM.
It is a little out of the way to get there,
but if you plan on staying more than ONE night...
it would be well worth the effort!!
Wow! Looks like our kind of place! I've saved this one for a future trip! Thanks...
